Changes That Can Help You Spend Less and Save More

It’s always good to learn more ways to save money. While I’m sure you’ve heard of some of these tips – maybe there are a few you haven’t yet considered. Here are some tips and ideas below to help save more.

Are You A Coffee Drinker?

Do you need a morning cup of coffee every day? You can buy a can of decent coffee for about $5 at your local grocery store. Buying your coffee at the drive through coffee shop can add up quickly. I used to spend at least $80 a month on coffee and I buy the basic cup. Think of how much some spend on those premium blends. Some premium cups come with that tempting title and picture on the menu – La Mocha Delight or Vanilla hazelnut Cream. I used to buy a regular coffee which would run me about $2 a cup. Depending on the day I could very well be back that afternoon for a second.

While we’re on the subject of beverage, where do you get your water? Have you considered buying a Brita filter for your tap? Water is great for you and having a filter can save you a lot of money on bottled water. In front of grocery stores you may see water stations which provide a very affordable way to buy clean drinking water. You may want to also buy a few 5 gallon jugs to avoid unnecessary trips.

Re-use When You Can:

I always find a use for grocery bags. I know those who are going green try to stay away from plastic grocery bags but what do they use for their smaller trash cans? Do they have reusable bags for bathroom trash? How about cleaning up after the dog in the backyard? Grocery bags work great for this also. You may want to double bag it. You’re not going to save a fortune by reusing your grocery bags but if you’re not finding other uses for them, consider the possibilities.

Buying In Bulk Works For Auto Insurance Also:

Put away a little money each month so you have enough to pay for a full year of insurance coverage on your car. Buying your policy up front for a year can save you an average of 10%. The average policy is about $1000 making the average savings $100. With an annual policy you don’t have to worry about rate hikes or missing a monthly payment. One lapse can make your rates go up by hundreds a year. There are also a lot of companies who don’t insure drivers without a current policy leaving you with fewer options to compare. Also be sure to compare quotes. Insurance is a costly expense and shoppers will generally save about $500 when they choose to compare rather than go with the first company they speak with. Comparing quotes will help you narrow down your search to find the company who has the cheapest car insurance rates.

When Times Are Hard Do What Needs To Be Done:

Are you in a tough spot with less money than monthly expenses? When this happens it’s easy to be late on payments and get even further behind with your normal expenses + late fees. Develop a strategy to be on time with as many bills as possible. Also consider downsizing what you can to help get yourself back in a position where you are more stable. Albert Einstein defines insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Should I Really Turn Off My Cell Phone?

Before 1973 nobody had wireless phones. Consider trying out a landline for a few months or just until you get back on your feet. Unless you’re a business person or you’re just young and single, you’ll be amazed at how easy it really is to go with only a landline for awhile.

Consider Using Public Transportation:

Take the bus to work a few days out of the week. Bus fares are cheap and gas prices are a killer. I love taking the bus from time to time – especially when I ‘m feeling down about something going on in my life. If you’re feeling bad about something going on at work or money or maybe a relationship – take a bus ride. I’m serious, you won’t feel so bad by the time you’re done with the ride. You’ll find all walks of life at the bus station and riding on the bus. You’ll notice some of these lives look twice as hard as anything you may be going through whether it be the young woman with 5 kids and no real destination or the odd guy in the back who’s brushing his teeth with his finger.

These are just a few tips on how to save money. You may want to check out this state directory of cheap insurance companies online.
